Alice Myers always knew what she wanted to be when she grew up—a boy. As a senior at Phillips Exeter Academy, they achieved their dream. How Alice became Alex was the subject of a riveting talk in Monday’s Assembly by Alex, now a member of Phillips Exeter Academy’s English faculty and a noted transgender advocate and gender identity educator. An author as well, Alex told the story of an illustrious ancestor, Deborah Samson, who disguised herself as a man to enlist in the Colonial army and fight for American independence with George Washington’s troops, a yarn Alex relates in the novelized biography, “Revolutionary.” Some stories—like Alex’s own—are better than fiction.
